Auto refresh feature in VMM 2019

$

We recently installed VMM 2019 in our environment and added VMware vCenter servers.

We would like to know if any changes to the hosts and VMs ((add/remove) from the vcenter will be replicated on VMM as well.

Does it auto refresh or need to do manually each time we do changes on vcenter?

Unable to connect to virtual machine with SCVMM console

$

Not so much a question as a statement, just in case somebody else finds it useful...

A few days ago I found I couldn't connect to any VM consoles using SCVMM 2016, with it presenting the following dialogue (note the correct spelling of "dialogue :-) ):

"An unknown error occurred while executing the PowerShell script:

The connection to the VMM management server [servername] was lost. Ensure that [servername] is online and that you can access the server remotely from your computer. Then connect to [servername] and try again using the new connection. Or, you can ensure that the Virtual Machine Manager service is started on [servername]... ID: 27235".

Similar errors when refreshing a virtual machine, or attempting to view a virtual machine's properties - it would say that the VM configuration was corrupt.

If I uninstalled SCVMM console and re-installed, it was fine, then stopped working later. To cut a long story short, it seems that Windows Updates was installing KB4496921 (released 23 July 2019) which broke it, every time.

I have blocked the update using the "show or hide updates tool" from here.

WDS integrated with SCVMM

Hello,

Your help if someone has happened this with SCVMM 2019
I have a virtualization environment with Hyper-v window server 2019 2019 datacenter in cluster (in total 5 physical servers), the problem I am having is that adding a PXE server gives me the following error.
Error (21150)
Failed to customize WinPE Image.
Recommended Action
Verify that Virtual Machine Manager and the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit are installed correctly.
What I recommend I have installed correctly, in addition to this in the details in the part of the error tells me: failed on "Import a new Windows PE image".
I have uninstalled the wds role and reinstalled it, but the problem is not resolved.

Someone who has done this and has solved it.

Thank you very much for your help.

SCVMM 2012 R2 RU14

Hi all,

SCVMM Server Version 2012 R2 RollUp 14 installed, was trying to upgrade to 2016, with the procedure of:

"Remove Features and Retain Database" -> than the "OS Upgrade".

the VMM on the 2016 Server had WinRM errors, and the Hosts could not connect to it, so the server restored back,

We'll now install brand new VMM 2016 Server with new name and IP, include New 2016 SQL and ADK,

than plan to install SCVMM 1801 and attach/restore the database,

Or will you recommend other procedure we should follow so we can keep as much as configuration as we can,

thanks a lot,

Get-SCPerformanceData returning incorrect/strange data

Hello.

I stumbled upon Get-SCPerformanceData cmdlet while trying to retrieve VM CPU performance history.

I've ran this:

Get-SCPerformanceData -VM $vm -PerformanceCounter CPUUsage -TimeFrame Hour

(stored the desired VM in the $vm variable ahead ofcourse)

I was expecting to get the performance data for past HOUR, but when I look at the PerformanceHistory and/or TimeSamples properties of the output, it returns 320 values going back to previous day.

Do I understand the -TimeFrame parameter wrong?

Next, I assume the CPUUsage returns the 'CPU Average' value for the VM (which (should) translates to “%Guest Run Time” counter of “Hyper-V Hypervisor Virtual Processor(_Total)” counter set on the Hyper-V host). The TimeSamples property of the Get-SCPerformanceData output shows the data is collected every 9 minutes and does so twice in rapid succession (sometimes it's the same second, sometimes it's 2 seconds). Is this working as it's supposed to? Are these data points already the averages? Or does VMM really only collect the data 2x/9mins??

Also, VMM console describes the average as "Past 10 minutes performance data", while it should be 9 minutes? As was also original described (https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/System-Center-Blog/How-SCVMM-Determines-CPU-Average-Displayed-in-the-Admin-Console/ba-p/341548)

Hyper-V: Hyper-V Server 2016
VMM: VMM 2016 UR7

PS: I've noticed the VMM database has a table tbl_PCMT_PerfHistory_Raw, which I assume contains all values? Is there a way to get the raw data from VMM PSH?

Self Service Usage in VMM

Hi there! So I've rolled out the product and love the added visibility and controls. I'm hoping to break it out further for Tech teams and Dev to clear up numerous hypervisor and network management issues.

One use case I wanted to run past you guys for some ideas is as follows.

Our Tech teams have a preconfigured VM environment (call it 5 VMs) they stand up for Demo, testing and training purposes. We than have ADFS WAP rules preconfigured for these environments to be accessed externally. For updating they environment, they power down the VMs and then copy in the new VHDX file, fire it up and then reconfigure the IP stack and they're back up and running.

Would there be an easy or graceful way for them to update their VM contents if they are under a self service role? We're also going the Static IP Auto-assignment route. Obviously keeping local hypervisor access would do the trick, but that defeats some of the concept of private cloud and self-service and may not be terribly ISO friendly.

SCVMM .mrt and .rct lefovers after VM migration

I'm currently running SCVMM 2019 and 3 standalone Hyper-V 2019 hosts. While using Veeam backup software with CBT enabled, .MRT and .RCT files are created next to .VDHX files to keep the changed block information.
The problem is when moving VM from one host to another using "Migrate Virtual Machine" function in SCVMM, .MRT and .RCT files are left in the original location and are not copied to the new host. Is there a way for SCVMM to be aware of .MRT and .RCT during migration?

SCVMM VM automatic shutdown after host migration and virtualization components install

$

Everytime after I migrate a VM from one standalone host to another using "Migrate Virtual Machine", I get a warning:

"Warning (23370)
Virtual Guest Services were not installed or updated for virtual machine *****, because the operating system on the host computer ******, does not support updating Virtual Guest Services from the host.
Recommended Action
To update the virtual machine's Virtual Guest Services, go to Windows Update from within the virtual machine."

Migration job finishes and VM starts. After a couple of minutes it gets a shutdown. After manually powering on the VM, I'm seeing a USER32 event saying:
"The process C:\VMMGuestAgent.exe (*****) has initiated the shutdown of computer ****** on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Application: Installation (Planned)
 Reason Code: 0x84040002
 Shutdown Type: shutdown
Comment: The server must be rebooted by SCVMM to intall virtualization components."

Question 1: does SCVMM have to install virtualization components everytime the VM is migrated from one host to the other? It happens no matter how many times I migrate the VM (even back and forth between the hosts).
Question 2: Why does it initiate a SHUTDOWN event instead of RESTART? It wouldn't be that bad if it was a RESTART because currently I have to way for the process to finish and power on every migrated VM manually.

Smi-s storage provider not responding and failing to refresh

Hello,

We user SCVMM 2012 R2 UR 13 in combination with Netapp 3.0 shares. To make the shares available we have a seperate server running with the Netapp SMI-s agent.

For the last few days the SMI-s storage provider is showing status 'not responding' in the console and it fails to refresh or rescan with the following error:

2901: The operation did not complete successfully because of a parameter or call sequence that is not valid.  Ensure that the parameters are valid, and then try the operation again.

On the smi-s agent server everything seems to be working alright. I can query the storage system without problems.

I have restarted both the SCVMM server and the SMI-S server, but this did not help.

I also tried to create a trace file on the SCVMM server for the storage provider which shows this error:

Dear All ,
Good Day. i have a question about how can i manage multiple sites using VMM . i have main site with VMM and using update server within the main site . Now i have remote site and need to deploy updates using VMM but we don't need the clients take the updates from the main site over WAN.
Should it be VMM server in remote site to manage updates on it OR we can using VMM with branch cache ?

Regards ,,,

I've got the console on:

1) the server itself with Windows Server 2019 Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.379)

2) a client machine with Windows 10 Pro Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.615)

3) another server with Windows Server 2016 Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.2906)

This VMM server has been migrated from the old 2016 server (number 3) to the new 2019 server (number 1). Before being migrated, it was upgraded from 2016 to 2019.

I've also had to do some manual cleaning of the database but I was careful to delete only the orphaned logical switch and connected objects (I deleted only records that were linked by constraints).

I could also recreate the whole server (on another server) with a new database if I need to, but I'd like to know if that is a doable thing... will I be able to reconnect to the new SCVMM the existing hyper-v cluster without service disruption? For example, will VMM match the existing virtual switch of the cluster to the same name switch I will create in the new instance?

Failed while applying switch port settings 'Ethernet Switch Port Security Settings'

When trying to connect my VM Network Adapter to my Logical Switch I get this error.

Failed while applying switch port settings 'Ethernet Switch Port Security Settings' on switch 'Logical Switch': One or more arguments are invalid (0x80070057).
Unknown error (0x8005)

I have deleted and rebuilt the entire Logical Switch, Port Profile and then deleted and re-created the switch on each of the Hyper-V hosts with no resolve.  This same message appears when trying to directly connect the VM using Hyper-V Manager.

Hope that someone here might have an idea as to what is causing it.

SCVMM 2016 not display any Operating system past 2008r2

When creating a VM from either a template or creating one on the fly. It doesn't allow me to specify the operating system as anything more than 2008r2?

Is this a bug or a setting somewhere?

Oddity with Migrating in to Private Cloud

$

Hi there. I'm migrating our 2012R2 hypervisor environment up into VMM 2019 on 2019 and then breaking out Private Clouds for departments to use as opposed to having dedicated hypervisors.

One weird issue I'm seeing is in setting the tenant and user groups. So I created the private cloud with it's dedicated VLAN, resource quotas, etc.. all looks gravy from the admin side. Then went into the VM view and modified the VMs to be included to the farm. Everything is still great; quotas assigned and resources graphed out, etc... I configure a tenant admin group removing rights for shielded VMs and azure profiles, but otherwise left that open. I also left the user group resource limits unchecked, thinking it would just inherit from the private cloud.

I then log in as a tenant admin user to QA the site.... and there's nothing available. Going back to the tenant admun user group for this cloud, I add all the VMs into the Resources pane of the User role group and going back to the test user, I can now see the VMs. But what is still not working? Quota. Quota shows up as empty of resources with the set threshold listed. Outside of logic this then seems to prevent VM creation, snapshotting and other resource dependent functions.

Anyone know what might be going on here?

Virtual network adapter not getting installed

The issue started when I tried to add a new virtual network in VMware Workstation 14 using Virtual Network Editor but the changes revert back without getting applied. I tried with different versions (VMware Workstation 15 too) multiple times but the issue remained. Then I noticed the virtual network adapter is not getting installed during the VMware installation process (I tried attaching the pics but I'm a new user here and cannot attach any images or links). The same thing happened for Virtual Box too. At last I enabled Hyper-V, and during the reboot I get the message "We Couldn’t Complete the Updates. Undoing Changes". What can I do to sort this issue?

An internal error has occurred trying to contact the 'VMM2019' server: NO_PARAM: NO_PARAM.

Hi guys,

I get this when trying to deploy a VM template to one of my hosts. Any idea why?

Enviroment :

Hyper-V 2016 Cluster

SCVMM 2019 on Server 2016.

This did not happen before the upgrade of the VMM from 2016 to 2019.

Anyone else having this issue?

I've upgraded SCVMM 2016 on my Server 2016 to 2019, and afterwards made an Inplace Upgrade of Server 2016 to Server 2019, so this happened a few days after.

Error (20406)
VMM could not enumerate instances of class Msvm_VirtualSystemManagementService on the server "hypervserver1.domain.local" Failed with error HRESULT 0x803381a2 The WinRM client cannot process the request. CredSSP authentication is currently disabled in the client configuration. Change the client configuration and try the request again. CredSSP authentication must also be enabled in the server configuration. Also, Group Policy must be edited to allow credential delegation to the target computer. Use gpedit.msc and look at the following policy: Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Credentials Delegation -> Allow Delegating Fresh Credentials.  Verify that it is enabled and configured with an SPN appropriate for the target computer. For example, for a target computer name "myserver.domain.com", the SPN can be one of the following: WSMAN/myserver.domain.com or WSMAN/*.domain.com

Recommended Action

Ensure the provider is running, and then try the operation again.

Test-WSMan - OK
Allow Delegating Fresh Credentials GPO - Is done, but however seems not to be working

Hello all,

I have exact the same issue as the one stated here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/7c320856-dc53-4276-84eb-bb5aee99b3f7/vmm-2012-r2-create-or-update-run-as-account-failure-the-specified-directory-service-attribute-or?forum=virtualmachinemanager, only we have a SCVMM 2019 environment (10.19.1013.0).

When creating a new Run As Account (in GUI as well as via powershell) this error is shown (with or without Validate domain credentials checkbox ticked):

The original (2012 R2 related) question was never answered. Can someone please help me finding a (starting point to find the) solution?
