What is TechNet Guru Competition?

Each month Microsoft TechNet Wiki council organizes a contest of the best articles posted that month. This is your chance to be announced as MICROSOFT TECHNOLOGY GURU OF THE MONTH!

One winner in each category will be selected each month for glory and adoration by the MSDN/TechNet Ninjas and community as a whole. Winners will be announced in dedicated blog post that will be published inMicrosoft Wiki Ninjas blog, a tweet fromMicrosoft Wiki Ninjas Twitter account, links will be published atMicrosoft TNWiki group on Facebook, and other acknowledgement from the community will follow.

Some of our biggest community voices and many MVPs have passed through these halls on their way to fame and fortune.

If you have already made a contribution in the forums or gallery or you published a nice blog, then you can simply convert it into a shared wiki article, reference the original post, and register the article for the TechNet Guru Competition. The articles must be written in June 2019 and must be in English. However, the original blog or forum content can be from beforeJune 2019.

Come and see who is making waves in all your favorite technologies. Maybe it will be you!

Who can join the Competition?

Anyone who has basic knowledge and the desire to share the knowledge is welcome. Articles can appeal to beginners or discusse advanced topics. All you have to do is to add your article to TechNet Wiki from your own specialty category.

How can you win?

  1. Please copy/Write over your Microsoft technical solutions and revelations to TechNetWiki.
  2. Add a link to your new article on THIS WIKI COMPETITION PAGE (so we know you've contributed)
  3. (Optional but recommended) Add a link to your article at the TechNetWiki group on Facebook to get feedback and tips from the council members and from the community. The group is very active and people love to help. You can even get direct improvements to your article before the contest starts.

Do you have any question or want more information?

Feel free to ask any questions below, or Join us at the official MicrosoftTechNet Wiki groups on facebook. Read More about TechNet Guru Awards.

If you win, people will sing your praises online and your name will be raised as Guru of the Month.

Generation 2 VM boot order multiple entries

I deployed a number of machines on SCVMM 2012 R2 and they boot via an attached ISO which then stream a Citrix PVS vDisk. When the machines are deployed, the don't have an entry in this format: File > bootmgfw.efi. After the first boot this entry is added to the machine and is put as first in the list. I noticed lately that now some machines have 3-4 entries like this, most probably generated after I updated the Citrix vDisk. My question is what trigger SCVMM or Hyper-V to add these entries ? What can i do to avoid having them, because it seems the number grows and then at some stage I need to clean this up. And also every time a new one is added is always at the top of the list. And also where this is list is maintained ? Is in SCVMM itsellf or is in the Diskc (C drive) ?

SCVMM 2019 SDN deployment

Hi,

I have questions with regard to deployment of SDN 2019 in SCVMM 2019.

a. For SCVMM 2019 deployment of SDN, does it still require the 3 networks namely Management, HNV and transit as before? Github templates is still using the old templates. Not sure whether it is still valid.

b. If SDNExpress 2019 is deploy first and then SCVMM 2019 is installed, is it able to manage SDN? Notice that SDNExpress 2019 only use Management and HNV network.

Thanks

Minimum Servers / Collocation

Hi,

1.  What are the minimum number of servers required to implement an SCVMM Solution (All Roles)?

2.  What server roles can be collocated on the same server?

Thanks in advance.

SQL Recommendations

Hi,

I understand that Single SQL or SQL Cluster for all System Center products (CM, OM, VMM, O, SM, etc.) is not recommended although supported.  I have following questions regarding the issue?

1.  Is it really supported?  If not, can I have a link to microsoft documentation so that I can show as an evidence to convince one of my customers?

2.  If it is supported, what potential issues I can run into? Performance, Compatibility, etc.

3.  Is it really practical to do that even if it is a small environment? Especially keeping OM and SM's Datawarehouse and OM's ACS Databases in mind?

4.  What would be recommended in this scenario of small environment? Localized SQL for better performance and quicker recovery time?

5.  I could not find any collocation matrices for system center products on technet.  Before I remember they were used to be there.  Any link with respect to that would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Running Two-2 VMM Servers in HQ/DR Scenario

$

Hi,

WARNING:  COULD BE THE MOST STUPID QUESTION YOU MIGHT HAVE EVER READ!

SCENARIO:  Consider Two-2 Sites (HQ and DR).  Both HQ and DR are running same Applications, but only HQ Applications are ACTIVE and in use.  In case of disaster, BACKUP is RESTORED on the DR Site Applications and they become ACTIVE for users until fallback happens to HQ Site.  HQ Site has it's own SCVMM Server managing HQ Site Applications and DR Site has it's own SCVMM Server that is managing DR Site Applications.  Both SCVMM are joined with same AD Domain.

1.  Is this good design?

2.  Can we face any issues with this strategy?

3.  SCVMM has a DR mechanism of Backup/Restore.  Should we be following that or for our environment, we can manage it through this method as well.

4.  Is this even possible in the same AD Domain?

5.  Thoughts on the strategy?

Thanks in advance.

VM with PVLAN get reset to isolated when changeing configuration on VM

Hi,

VMs on SCVM using pVLAN in community mode, get reset to isolated(shows isolated when checking With get-vmnetworkadaptervlan command on host), expecially when doing changes to the VM: like expanding disk, changing RAM config . Sometimes after a reboot

Happens on random servers, not always

- Is this a bug? Happens on 2012R2 and 2016 clusters
- Anywhere I can Catch this when it happens? Possible to turn on events in eventlog?
- Possible to set default value to community instead of isolated?

anyone else have this issue?

regards

Andreas

How to delete VHD, VHDX of VM deleted in Hyper-V

What are the ways one can delete the orphaned VHD files. I deleted a VM from a 3 server cluster, and wish to remove the VHD to free space needed on the server. Cmd "del" didn't work "couls not find file". Why isn't there an option within Hyper-V to delete VHD files?

Synology as VMM Library?

So I have our new SCCM VMM 2019 deployed and overall it is a great utility and we like what we see. My only big need is this. We archive VHDXs of terminated employee laptops and VMs and store them on a File Share on a Synology NAS. What I'm trying to accomplish is to be able to use the "Store in Library" function to effectively archive a VM. I've tried simple things like creating a folder shortcut to point to the UNC of the NAS but within the VMM Library, it doesn't see it. I don't seem to be able to add a non-windows file share. I do have the SMI provider connected but that does not seem to be what I'm looking for. Obviously I could go the iSCSI route, but I'm trying to avoid rearchitect existing process and locations. Possibly a clue, "Create file share" under Storage Fabrics seems to be disabled for me.

Windows 10/7 VM's are getting locked out automatically after triggering tests

Hi,

This issue is been observed in our VM's, which are getting locked out.

Process we follow to trigger tests:

1. Start an Agent to "listening For Jobs"

2. Trigger test cases using VNext build definitions.

3. Come out of VM using TSCON cmd given below which keeps session interactive

"

for /f "skip=1 tokens=2" %%s in ('query user %SESSIONID%')do (
  %windir%\System32\tscon.exe %%s /dest:console
)

"

NOTE: Sometime SESSIONID/ SESSIONNAME works fine in coming out of VM but not every time and not in every VM.

Please suggest any solution to prevent locking out of VM's

Renew Microsoft Remote Attestation Service certificate

Hello,

we currently have a issue on a virtual machine manager 2016 environment where we have to renew a "Microsoft Remote Attestation Service" certificate on each hyper-v host. I find a lot of documentation regarding Host Guardian Service which should use these certificates but I can't find how I can check this where this HGS should be hosted and how to renew the certificates eventually if needed. Can someone guide me in the right direction? Thanks.

Best regards

https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/4036543/error-26311-when-you-try-to-add-a-storage-device-to-the-storage-fabric

but it's not my case, the 2019 cluster is brand new and not an upgraded one. I also did run the Update-ClusterFunctionalLevel but did not solve anything.

Any suggestion?

thanks

Cannot migrate VM from old cluster to new one

My system is this:

1) VMM 2019 (upgraded from 2016, once upgraded from 2012 R2) on Windows Server 2016

2) 8 node 2016 GUI cluster (iSCSI as storage)

3) 4 node 2019 Core hyperconverged cluster

I'm trying to migrate VMs from old cluster to new one. On the target host I'm getting Hyper-V-VMMS 1106 errors: 80070569 Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.

I've checked and the logon as a service is configured just fine on the tartget host (SeServiceLogonRight = *S-1-5-80-0,*S-1-5-83-0).

On the VMM side, the job is failing with this error:

Error (12700)
VMM cannot complete the host operation on the 'hv106.eav.local' server because of the error: Virtual machine migration operation for 'AdminPC' failed at migration source 'HV106'. (Virtual machine ID 8F346CF2-92EA-4ED9-BB41-2A37648D5583)

The Virtual Machine Management Service failed to authenticate a connection for a Virtual Machine migration with host 'hv001.eav.local'. Please check the Admin events of the host 'hv001.eav.local' in the Hyper-V-VMMS event log for more information.

Failed to receive data for a Virtual Machine migration: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (0x80072746).
Unknown error (0x8000)

I noticed that when I select, on the target host, the "use these IP addresses..." in the live migration section, the error changes slightly to "Failed to send data...". With "Use any available network..." the error is "Failed to receive data...".

I found something about jumbo frames but the networks that can provide a path between source host and destination host are not using jumbo frames (on each cluster I've got a CSV network and a Live Migration without gateways configured).

Any help? Thanks

DHCPExtn failing to install

When I deploy the VMM client to a host, I get an error that says "Installation of switch extension found in C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center\Virtual Machine Manager\SwExtn\DHCPExtn.msi failed for host $host". Installing that specific extension manually gives me the error 'There is a problem with this Windows Installer package" message. This has a domino effect when I go to deploy my logical switches, which don't deploy at all.

This has been a new problem since I installed the July 2019 updates. I've gone as far as completely rebuilding my VMM server (but keeping the database) with freshly downloaded ISOs for both Windows server and VMM but this problem persists. Uninstalling the July updates didn't help either, so I'm not entirely convinced that's the problem.

I'm running VMM 1807 on server 2016 and all of my hosts are running server 2016 as well. What can I do to get this extension working again?

sysprep doesnt enable webserver IIS windows server 2012 r2 datacenter

Hello everyone,

Im trying to deploy windows 2012 r2 vm. Ive a sysprep config with two part, servicing and settings. all settings part is succesfully configured in the so, but servicing doesnt and is supposed to enable iis webserver. When vm starts i go to c:/ windows/panther/unattend.xml is present and complete. if i run the unattend.xml with pkgmgr it enable servicing.

The question is why it doesnt work on the first attemp, while so is installing. But then it works if i do manually.

Thanks.
