Can VMM 2016 use the same PXE server as SCCM 1610?

I've been doing PXE boot imaging from SCCM for years. Now I'm trying to learn how to use VMM, which I know very little about.

In researching the best way to upgrade our Hyper-V hosts to 2016, I found that VMM Bare Metal Installs and Rolling Cluster Upgrades can do it very easily, if VMM has an available PXE server. So my question is... can I just point VMM to the existing PXE server already being used by SCCM?

This Technet article: How to Add a PXE Server to VMM says I can use an existing WDS based PXE server, but doesn't mention anything about using an SCCM managed PXE server. Plus the article is referring to VMM 2012 R2 and I'm running 2016.

I do not want to break my SCCM environment. We rely very heavily on that infrastructure. At the same time Ido not want to deal with multiple PXE servers on my network. Can someone confirm whether using one PXE server for both is a supported configuration or not?

Hello,

I currently have SCVMM 2012 and manage Server 2008 R2, 2012\R2 hyper-V hosts with it. I'd like to start working with Server 2016 in our environment and was wondering if I can manage a Server 2016 Hyper-V host server using SCVMM 2012? Thanks

Creating VM using CentOS7 Template getting Heartbeat Error in SCVMM 2012 R2(UR11 Hotfix1)

Hello all,

I have created a CentOS7 VM template in my SCVMM 2012 R2 lab. There's nothing unnatural while creating/enabling the template.

But whenever I tried to create a VM using that template, the VM creation Stuck to 99% every time & after a long time(Nearly 1 hr) it fails giving the following error :

Error (609).

Virtual Machine Manager cannot detect a heartbeat from the specified virtual machine. Either the virtual machine is not running or Virtual Machine Additions is not installed.

Recommended Action
Verify the status of the virtual machine by connecting to it using Virtual Machine Remote Client (VMRC), and then try the operation again.

Any help?

NOTE : All the other VM creation are working fine.

SCVMM 2016 SDN Software Load Balancer causing Network issue

The deployment of SLBMUX service withing SDN on SCVMM 2016 is failing at 99%. The failure caused by the parallel step (Pre-Install 3) from the Application deployment inside the Service Template. After digging into more and checking the Script running at Pre-Install3. We found there are 4 steps includes creating (Self Signed Certificate) if not already created, or try to create the certificate from CA, registers the (Self Signed Certificate), start the service, and at the end modifying WINRM envelope from 4000 to 5000 not sure for what. As soon as SLBMUX service starts on the SLB VM by the script, it breaks the network. After looking at the NetMon it is generating traffic from any of the servers in the network to an IP and flooding the network and causing the network outage. 

Not sure what is being caused from the certificates or by the SLBMUX service.

Network controller. "Service providing Network Controller role, should have VMs with only one NIC connected to a No-Isolation network."

Implementet a Network controller, that worked fine.. After deploying it, and adding it as a Service I am getting this error below. Is it not possible to USE one network, a management network to just test it out?

Network Controller. Scanning Provider. False on everything, when using FQDN.

When adding a Network Controller as a Service it says False on every service WHEN using DNS name. When using IP it works. I can ping nc01.sdn.lab without any problem and have full connectivity.

The Cert looks fine. The DNS name is nc01.sdn.lab and friendlyname is something random. I guess that does not matter?

keep vmm data of vm's when migrating to new vmm installation

Hi.

Is there a simple way to migrate vmm data of vm's between vmm installations?

The scenario is that i today have a 2012 r2 vmm installation which includes several hyperv clusters. I also have a new 2016 vmm installation that i want to move to. I preferr not to do an upgrade of the existing environment.

I have tried to just export the parameters i need using powershell and then import them using powershell but some parameters seems not editable. like for instance addedtime.

anyone have any great ideas?

SCVMM - Service Template "Needs Attention"

Hello,

I currently have an issue where one of my recently deployed service templates is flagged with a red cross icon and its status is set as "Needs Attention". The thing is as far as I can tell the service has successfully deployed.

I do not wish to redeploy the service from scratch and refreshing the VM's does not clear the issue.

Is there anything I can set in the database to change this services status to "OK"?

VMM and Shared VHDX

According to the VMM documentation, if I want to use Shared VHDX I need to define and use it in a service template.

If I created two VMs in Hyper-V using a shared VHDX, would the shared VHDX be recognised by VMM? Could I still reconfigure these VMs in VMM?

In other words, is this a limitation of how VMs are created in VMM, or is VMM incapable of recognising and working with shared VHDX outside a VMM set created by a service template?

VM Template default storage and default networking

How can I modify a template or the SCVMM settings to prefer one CSV over another for placement of disk and or vm. Also how do i default to a vlan. My hope is to be able to create a vm from a template and after hitting next, next.. we have a VM and Disks in a standard location. Currently we have 2 CSV's and 1 clustered file server. The file server shows up as the default location to place both the vm and the disks.

Converged networking is unreliable. Your experience?

What has been your experience with converged networking?

Is it reliable?

I have been experiencing multiple problems with converged networking in VMM + Server 2012 R2. Our config is pretty straight forward: VMM is used to team two 10Gb NICs and a logical switch is created. Under the logical switch, we have 3 vNICs: mgt, cluster and live migration.

The problem is that the one or two virtual NICs under a logical switch somehow go missing after a node restart. This problem is not reproduceable, happens intermittently and over three separate clusters on three different brands of hardware and inside two separate datacenters. This has caused major downtime in production.

Multiple support tickets with Microsoft have resulted in nothing other than "nuke and pave"......essentially delete the converged networking config and recreate it.....only to fail again.

Very frustrated! I am ready to give up and check VMware's solution.

How do i fix failed storage migration (and possible causes)

Problem

I have two running VM in a failed storage migration state on a cluster (scvmm plus seven hosts, all 2012r2, Equallogic iscsi SAN).

Looking at the storage folder dates this happened prior to the oldest VMM log entries so I cannot see the error messages.

The previous support is uncontactable.

I'd like to know how to get these VM back to the normal state and then investigate the cause.

1st VM

On what i think was the original LUN I have the VM XML files and the folder containing the bin and vsv files but no vhdx

On what i think was the target LUN I have another VM XML file with the same name and timestamp but the accompanying folder has no bin or vsv file, it does however have the vhdx

In VMM the server has job status failed, and if i look in the properties it thinks the vhdx is on the original LUN

In failover cluster manager the VM is not visible

In Hyper-V Manager the VM is running but the values on the tabs are None, Unknown, Unavailable, Load Failure, etc

On the host itself Get-VM shows Storage migration - synchronizing files and operational status of StorageMigrationPhaseTwo

2nd VM

Just like the 1st VM the apparent original LUN has the VM XML files and the folder containing bin and vsv and the apparent target LUN has another XML with same name and timestamp, no bin or vsv but has the vhdx

Additional

I'm normally a VMWare guy, These servers are semi-production but with maintenance windows available, I can't find a detailed breakdown of the hyper-v storage migration process to determine where in the process these migrations failed

Once i'm comfortable in recovering these VM i will kick off a storage migration to see what happens, get error codes, and hopefully identify the cause but i would rather not start any until that point

SCVMM 2016

Hi

I have 3 nodes member of hyper v fail-over cluster , OS win server 2012 R2 .

I have 3 nodes with win server 2016 and i want to install hyper v failover cluster in order to migrate all VMs from old cluster 2012 R2.

I also want to install VMM 2016 on the new cluster in order to manage it .

I have to configure nic teaming in the new hyper v hosts 2016

Questions :

shall i install teaming before cluster ? if yes , shall i make Vnic for (clustering and heartbeat), then another vlans 

shall i install vmm 2016 before migrating all vms from old cluster 2012 to new one 2016 ?

what is the requirements before migrating to the new cluster ? 

I need a clear steps to migrate old VMs from old cluster to the new one

We're setting up two DCs with each its own SCVMM. Initial plan is to also give them each their own Library Server. Would it however also be possible to use one Library Server for two SCVMMs?

TEST disaster recovery

We offer DR for our customers to our second datacenter. All VMs are replicated by synchronous storage replication to the second DC. Previously we had one SCVMM that would see both DCs and all Hyper-V clusters in it, but when we would test a DR for a customer, SCVMM would get very confused. 

Procedure with 2012R2 was to snapshot the storage, mount the snap CSV on the DR cluster, scan the CSV for VM files, register those VM, connect to DR network (isolated) and boot the VMs. However, because of the ID inside of the VM files, SCVMM would get confused and see double VMs. In the production cluster the VM would then disappear from SCVMM until we finished the DR test and remove the VM from the DR cluster.

Also register the VMs would sometimes be difficult because we would read the XML file, search for the disks and register the VM and re-attach the disks. Problem is that the CSV could be "disk15" in Prod Cluster and "disk10" in DR cluster. That is very difficult to script.

Now with 2016 and the encrypted XML we have to look for different ways to do a DR and most importantly also a Test DR without interfering with production.

For safety we're looking at at least implementing a second VMM for DR, but we can't seem to find a reliable method to register the VMs and their disks, because the CSV volume would still have different names. We could make it very complicated by writing a text file in each volume, the says what the original name is and do mappings based on that. But I think that is very risky.

Any tips on how to do this are very welcome.

Unable to remove File Share from HOSTS

Hi,

I cannot remove file share from some hosts but I cannot understand why.

The "Remove" button from Hosts->Properties->Storage->File Shares is grey, only from one host I removed.

Could you help me?
