Hello All...........If I am using a Dynamically Expanding VHD on a Virtual Machine based on Hyper-V, VMware, etc.; and I enable OS BitLocker on it, would it take up all the size of the VHD i.e. 100 GB or 20 GB which is the actual size of VHD?

Thanks in advance.

If I add a vNic on the Logical switch, should it not then replicate its setting to the hosts? I can add the vNics on the Host and its seen in ncpa.cpl.

SCVMM 2016 on Windows 2016 - unable to perform operation without a connection to VMM server

I have installed SCVMM 2016 on a Windows 2016 server. I followed the deployment guide on TechNet, created a service account that was a local admin on the server, did the SPN stuff, had our DBA create the DB with SA as the DB owner and the Service Account having Sysadmin rights just for giggles to see if we could get the connection to work, but no dice. The install finishes (VMManager and the VConsole on the same server) and when I launch VMM, and connect to local host:8100 with my current credentials I get this error:

VMM is unable to perform tthis operation without a connection to a virtual machine manager management server

Use the Get-VMMServer cmdlet or the -VMMSERVER parameter to connect to a Virtual Machine Manager management server.

ID: 1615

I've ran those commandlets and when I put in the server name of the VMM server it still isn't recognized.  The services are all started..... I'm baffled as to what I need to do to open VMM.

Any ideas?

Error WinRM: Invoke-Command

Hi All,

I am using storage provider NetApp Release 8.2.2P1 and executing the following from my scvmm server.

$result=$null
                         $result=Invoke-Command -ComputerName $ComputerName -Credential $Credential -ScriptBlock {
                                param($Path)

                                try
                                {
                                   New-Item -Path  $Path -type directory -Force
                                }
                                catch
                                {
                                  return $_
                                }

                            }-ArgumentList $Path -Authentication Credssp -ErrorAction Stop

I am getting the following error.

Connecting to remote server server1 failed with the following error message : The client cannot connect to the destination specified in the request. Verify that the service on the destination is running and is accepting requests. Consult the logs and documentation for the WS-Management service running on the destination, most commonly IIS or WinRM. If the destination is the WinRM service, run the following command on the destination to analyze and configure the WinRM service: "winrm quickconfig". For more information, see the about_Remote_Troubleshooting Help topic.

Any help?

Thanks in advance.

Setting up SCVMM 2016 and experience some issues..

When I migrating a VM to shared storage, either via Migrate Storage or Migrate VM it will fail, and pause the VM after taking two Snapshots. It fails after Storage Migration is done, I see the VHDX on the SAN. When looking at Fail Over Cluster Manager Im seeing this error.

It fails here in scvmm:

When looking in the EventViewer, I see the error below. No idea if its relevant:

Event provider MSCLUSTEREXT attempted to register query "select * from MSCluster_ClusterUpgradedEvent" whose target class "MSCluster_ClusterUpgradedEvent" is not an event class. The query will be ignored. Contact the application vendor.

I have no idea where to begin. Could it by the SAN? Its infact a SMB3 file share.

Via Failover cluster manager i click settings on the VM I am getting this error.

Adding 2016 Node to VMM 2012 R2: CLR is not terminating

I'm having trouble adding a 3 node 2016 cluster to our VMM 2012 R2 deployment. The host status for all 3 of the 2016 hosts remains stuck at "Adding...." and when I check the error log that is created I see a "CLR is not terminating" error. We have no problems with our 20+ 2012 R2 nodes.

Any help is appreciated, here's the log:

My fileshares seems to work fine, but getting this error. I guess its because the share is in a different domain (lab env.) How do I I fix the mapping?

An internal error has occurred trying to contact the '10.10.10.100' server: :w:InternalError: :Windows System Error 1332:No mapping between account names and security IDs was done. .

WinRM: URL: [http://10.10.10.100:5985], Verb: [INVOKE], Method: [GrantAccess], Resource: [http://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wmi/root/microsoft/windows/smb/MSFT_SmbShare?Name=SAN-SSD500GB+ScopeName=*]

Check that WS-Management service is installed and running on server '10.10.10.100'. For more information use the command "winrm helpmsg hresult". If '10.10.10.100' is a host/library/update server or a PXE server role then ensure that VMM agent is installed and running. Refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2742275 for more details.

SCVMM 2012R2 network design on storage question

$

Planning on replacing an 3-node 2012r2 Hyper-V cluster with a new 5-node 2012R2 Hyper-V cluster. Due to several configuration errors in the old cluster it has been decided to create a new cluster and perform a share-nothing-live migration to move over the VM's from the old to the new cluster.

In the new nodes there are 8 NIC's available, and planning on adding an additional 4 port NIC making it a total of 12 NIC's per Hyper-V host (HP Proliant DL380 Gen9 with 1GB NICs)

Currently the old cluster is connected to a HP StoreVirtual, the same SAN will be used again.

All nodes are connected to a stacked switch

Planning on using SCVMM 2012R2 to configure the cluster. The plan is to create to seperate networks

1x VM Network traffic (2x NIC in teaming: LACP / port mode: dynamic)

1x Live migration, CSV (redirection), cluster heartbeat traffic (2x NIC in teaming: LACP / port mode: dynamic)

1x Host management traffic

2x iSCSI (MPIO)

The above should do it? As there is budget to add additional quad NIC the plan is to purchase one. But not sure as how much it would improve the performance? In other words: is it worth it?

I do realize there will be downtime as the VM's need to be reconfigured (network configuration)

Also the SAN has LUNs created and is used by the old cluster. The plan is to manage the SAN using SCVMM, the questions is: when adding the SAN to SCVMM will it erase existing data on the SAN?

Is there an equivalent to Shielding Data File (PDK) functionality for non-shielded VMs?

$

When creating a shielded VM, a PDK file can inject files into the VM such as certificates, scripts, unattend.xml, so this files can be used during deployment.

Is there an equivalent for unshielded VMs?

With New-SCVirtualMaschine it's possible to pass an AnswerFile to the VM, but no further files (scripts/certificates).

How is it possible to make files available to the guest VM during Setup?

Multiple static IP from different ISP bind into one virtual public IP address

Dear Experts,

I have a very specific requirement where I need a unique public IP address which does not change if I change the ISP.

Just to give some background, This is <g class="gr_ gr_26 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar only-del replaceWithoutSep" data-gr-id="26" id="26">for </g>a security solution where I have client machines which can be installed at customer's locations, these machines can send the notifications of <g class="gr_ gr_32 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" data-gr-id="32" id="32">various</g> event to CMS (Central monitoring station).

To do so, I set the IP address of the CMS (IP address, not domain name) <g class="gr_ gr_22 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" data-gr-id="22" id="22">in</g> the client machine along with the port.

For any event, the client machine will send the information to this IP and port.

Since this is the IP address of my CMS (public IP address provided by the ISP ), I will receive it and forwarded to <g class="gr_ gr_31 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" data-gr-id="31" id="31">respective</g> receiver using port forwarding.

Obviously, if the IP of my CMS changes or ISP's network goes down, I will not be able to <g class="gr_ gr_24 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="24" id="24">recieve</g> any notification.

To build the redundancy, I can take connections from multiple ISP, but each of them will provide a different public static IP, also , please note that I can only set one IP address as destination IP address at <g class="gr_ gr_36 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" data-gr-id="36" id="36">client</g> machine.

Is there <g class="gr_ gr_38 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling" data-gr-id="38" id="38">anyway</g> to combine these public static IPs <g class="gr_ gr_29 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling" data-gr-id="29" id="29">form</g> different ISPs into one virtual public IP address ? And then I can set this virtual public IP address <g class="gr_ gr_27 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" data-gr-id="27" id="27">in</g> the client machine. Client machine will send the notifications to this IP address and at my CMS, if one of the ISP has some issue, I will still get the notification as I will be connected to <g class="gr_ gr_42 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" data-gr-id="42" id="42">internet</g> from second ISP with same virtual public IP address...

I am not sure how well I have communicated the issue, let me know if you need any further details.

Thanks in <g class="gr_ gr_23 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="23" id="23">advace</g>.

What is the best way to support multiple Vmm versions 2012R2 (including GA- to Rollup 11) and 2016

I have an application (c#) which works with Scvmm (queries, changes and etc.) One of the requirements is that it should work with multiple Vmm versions (not simultaneously). So I built a logic that identifies the correct version and loads the necessary dlls. But going forward, it becomes harder to support it. I would appreciate your recommendations regarding my issue. Also, I have to notice that if there was an official SDK - it would be excellent.

SCVMM agent crashes on a single host upon compliance scan initiation

Hi all,

I have got a 7 node Hyper-V 2012 R2 cluster with latest updates managed by SCVMM 2012 (UR11 v.3.2.8228.0).

All the vSwitches on the nodes are configured via SCVMM and are identical. Compliance scan on 6 nodes works just fine whereas on a single node it fails with below error on VMM:

Error (2912)
An internal error has occurred trying to contact the HV1.bmauk.net server: : .

WinRM: URL: [http://hv1.bmauk.net:5985], Verb: [INVOKE], Method: [ScanForUpdates], Resource: [http://schemas.microsoft.com/wbem/wsman/1/wmi/root/scvmm/UpdateManagement]

The remote procedure call failed (0x800706BE)

Recommended Action
Check that WS-Management service is installed and running on server HV1.bmauk.net. For more information use the command "winrm helpmsg hresult". If HV1.bmauk.net is a host/library/update server or a PXE server role then ensure that VMM agent is installed and running. Refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2742275 for more details.

When I check the HV1 host itself it has got following error:

Faulting application name: vmmAgent.exe, version: 3.2.8228.0, time stamp: 0x57ff35a8

The vmm service on the machine is crashing every single time I initiate scan from VMM.

The Health status of the server is fine:

Should I just try to reinstall VMM agent on the server or somebody else faced this issue before?

Thanks for your help beforehand.

System Center VMM 2012 R2 - Windows Server 2016 OS showing as Unknown

I have recently updated System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2 to UR11 with hotfix to support the creation of the Windows Server 2016 guest virtual machines. Updates installed were:

Update Rollup 11 for System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager (KB3184831) - https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/kb/3184831
Hotfix 1 for Update Rollup 11 of System Center 2012 R2 Virtual Machine Manager (KB3199246) - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3199246

Applying these updates has now allowed me to deploy a Windows Server 2016 guest virtual machine through VMM. However in Virtual Machine Manager the OS for the Windows Server 2016 guest VM shows as unknown (see below screenshot):

Guest integration services for the guest VM is showing as installed and version is 10.0.14393.

Manually changing the operating system to Windows Server 2016 DataCenter against the guest VM's configuration does not work as when a refresh of the Virtual Machine or the host cluster is done it sets the Operating system back to unknown.

I have done a quick search on the web and could find any cause or workaround for this issue.

Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this?

Our environment is as follows:

Hypervisor - Hyper-V 2012 R2 running on Windows Server 2012 R2 physical server hosts which run in a Failover Cluster configuration.
